The defining characteristic that makes Down-to-Earth Canadian Real Estate Investing so vastly distinct from other publications on the same topic, is that it follows the author’s own diverse and fascinating journey. Chai Harjo’s ten-house strategy and real-life narrative takes the complicated subject of real estate investing and makes it relatable, understandable, and achievable for anyone who has a dream and the ambition to be successful in this field.
Enjoy my interview with Chai:
What inspired you to write this book?
It really was all about sharing my own experiences in this often-unpredictable world of real estate investing. It’s not a get rich quick book, nor is it a step by step guide, rather it is composed of the stories, good and bad, relating to my journey as far as building a ten-house portfolio.
I would add too, that there are very few books that provide such a detailed and intimate glimpse of what it’s like to undertake this type of venture. And further, there’s not much out there that deals specifically with Canadians investing in Canada-based real estate.
So, in more than one way, I felt there was a need to fill and, humbly, I believe Down-to-Earth Canadian Real Estate Investing serves this need well.
What do you want others to gain from your book?
I want others to get excited about real estate investing, and perhaps more importantly, I want them to gain confidence in their own ability to pursue such an endeavour. I work a 9-to-5 job in the IT sector. I am your average guy with a family, a mortgage, and all of the other typical responsibilities, and yet I followed my heart and was able to go after my dream. This is the message I wish to convey: you can do it, you just need some guidance, a little courage and a plan.
What was your creative process for this project?
Storytelling is at the heart of this project. I love telling stories and sharing my adventures (or misadventures as the case may be) with others. Essentially, I just began by jotting down my experiences and recollections; from there, I organized everything into a table of contents. Once I had all that down . . . the rest was pretty much smooth sailing, well, mostly.
Why did you choose the story-telling format you used?
I wanted to integrate my stories with lessons learned and couple those with more of a journal-type recounting of my experiences. When I read I like variety, I like different formats and different voices; so, in this book, I followed my heart and told my story in my own unique way.
What’s next for you as an author?
I would love to expand my consulting and mentoring work (one-to-one and with groups), specifically with aspiring real estate investors. I would also like to speak to interested audiences about my experiences. It makes it real and down-to-earth for people, like my book can help to do as well. Most of us find it tremendously helpful hearing from those who’ve actually done what we hope to do. Whatever I can do to support someone on their journey to reaching their dreams and goals, I am happy to .
I’ve also started in on my next book which looks at the world of real estate but focuses in on some larger life lessons as well.
Chai’s knowledge and experience about the real estate investing business is unquestionable and he builds a solid framework for all the elements necessary to succeed as a real estate investor. But it is his passion, honesty, and commitment for helping people that really shines through even more. Chai is a mentor in the truest sense of the word.
It has been a pleasure working with Chai on this project. We’re already looking forward to the wisdom he’ll impart in his next book and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
Warmest Regards,
