Wendy Poole’s debut book is a masterfully researched, well written story spanning almost a century and crossing three continents. She skillfully meshes actual historic events and timelines with stories that capture our imagination.
Dr. Laura von Hagen draws you in at the first chapter, The Loneliest Club I Never Asked to Join, sharing her own path to pregnancy, and helping us appreciate the difficult challenges of infertility due to polycystic ovarian syndrome. Then she proceeds to educate us about PCOS, and present solid research, professional insights, and positive options women can consider should they be dealing with PCOS themselves.
Lasting Lessons Beyond the Classroom is Allan Carswell’s third book in less than a year—a memorable year at that. To top it off he was recently presented with the Order of Ontario for his significant contributions to the field of laser-imaging technology and the development of related space instrumentation, a much-deserved honour to add to the previously awarded Order of Canada and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Allan Carswell’s writing exudes a lifetime of experience and wisdom in Lasting Lessons, sharing stories from his youth with insightful details.
Hearts Linked by Courage by Alzheimer Society of York Region represents a thoughtful and diverse compilation from a variety of generous contributors, reminding us that this disease knows no boundaries. To a large degree, anyone can be affected, and the road is often long and arduous on many fronts. I believe by continuing to educate ourselves and engage in caring conversations about a disease that affects so many, we can help to shift the narrative. Those who are living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias are so much more than their disease.
